Yaaaaaaay, last week, it was the Nightmare on Elm Street marathon! The 7 original movies, the versus with Jason Voorhees, and of course, the remake. Here some quick reviews.
A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
The first original movie from 1984. It was my favorite as a child, still is. First time we saw Freddy Krueger. Great cast, inventive scenes, Freddy is not yet very funny, it’s a strong horror movie. Directing from Wes Craven is really nice, far more better than most of his movies, lot of scenes are cult now (the bathtub, the first murder). Really good, even if some special effects may seem old now.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2: FREDDY’S REVENGE
First one was a hit, New Line Cinema didn’t wait longer to do a sequel. New screenwriter, new composer (Christopher Young here), new director (Jack Sholder - Hidden, Wishmaster 2), for a movie completely different from the first one. I guess that’s why I like it, because the movie is not a simple sequel doing the same thing as the first one. And again, it’s a serious horror movie. Some things are not perfect of course, like the ending, way too fast and “simple”, and some scenes, not useful (the dance in the bedroom…). But lot of interesting ideas.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: DREAM WARRIORS
Wes Craven is back for the original story, and Freddy is back to his original form let’s say. It’s the first movie of the saga when Freddy is really funny, and do jokes all the time. Some are great and really funny, some just don’t work… at all. That’s my problem with the movie, some ideas are just so great, and just after, a new idea not very good. It’s one of the most famous movie of the saga with the first one. I love the fact Heather Langenkamp is back on the leading character, to see John Saxon again, the main character (seen in BODY DOUBLE), the music by Angelo Badalamenti, some murders. But sometimes near the end, it’s just a bit too much crazy ideas.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4: THE DREAM MASTER
And it continues. This time with Renny Harlin as the director. A honest director of honest B movies (PRISON, DEEP BLUE SEA). As all his movies, there are some stupid ideas that I hate in it (the kung fu scenes, some actors not really good) but also great ideas (Freddy’s resurrection, the bug scenes), great soundtrack and amazing images.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 5: DREAM CHILD
Lot of people don’t like this movie because there’s not a lot of murders. I love it, just for one simple thing: the directing. Shots are often amazing, lot of visual ideas, gothic atmosphere with the big castle, murders are very inventive (love the bike scene), and soundtrack from Jay Ferguson is very hypnotic.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 6: FREDDY’S DEAD
Blah! As a child, I loved this movie. Because it has a lot of jokes, a video game sequence, some things about Freddy’s past. Now, I really don’t like it, for the same reasons. Too many jokes I don’t find funny at all, the video game sequence is ridiculous, Freddy is just a sad joke. Still, the past of Freddy is interesting, even if a bit easy. In fact now, I only like the first part, when Freddy’s not here yet. As one character said, they are really lost in a town like “Twin Peaks”, and I love that.

WES CRAVEN’S NEW NIGHTMARE
Wes Craven is back in the saga, and it’s good. Lot of awesome very mature ideas in that movie, very original, real pleasure to see all these characters and actors, story interesting, Freddy is scary in this one, and not just a joker. Some troubles with the rhythm of the movie, but meh, it’s good.

FREDDY VS JASON
Already wrote what I think about it a few months ago. I still love it. Of course, characters are bad and classic, actors are not that great, but they do what they can. No, if the movie is great, it’s for other reasons. It’s incredibly fun, incredibly bloody, incredibly inventive, and except the fact that human’s characters are not always great, the story itself is good. Very inventive and great idea to put Jason and Freddy in the same movie.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET REMAKE
When it was released, bad reviews everywhere, everyone was saying it was a shame, a really bad movie and everything. I was scared. And finally kinda enjoy it. Of course, everything’s not perfect. First, Freddy’s make up is bad, and we miss Robert Englund. Actors are not always great. When it’s a nightmare, it’s way too obvious, so no suspense, and it’s not scary. BUT it’s not boring, murders are nice, the actor of Freddy did a pretty nice job, directing is more than ok, good atmosphere. Nah, I enjoyed it, even if it’s not perfect, not the best, not scary.
