Me and My movies
COSMOPOLIS by David Cronenberg
Cronenberg always was an interesting director, since his first movie SHIVERS, to his last one, A DANGEROUS METHOD. But since a few years, in fact, since SPIDER in 2002, his cinema is more for everyone, more simple, his themes are not really here.
With COSMOPOLIS, he tries to adapt a book from Don DeLillo. He kept all the dialogues and write his script with that. The result is… weird. Not a lot of people are going to like the movie. The subject is really interesting, the directing is good, actors too (yeah, even Robert “Twilight” Pattinson), there’s a really good atmosphere. Also a great soundtrack by Howard Shore (as usual) and the band Metric (discovered them when I was in LA in 2010) and I can’t stop listening to the soundtrack since yesterday.
BUT, the movie is mainly a dialogue’s movie, and sometimes, it’s boring, too long. Weird, boring, but also fascinating and interesting at the same time. Strange. But I liked it :)

NUDE
So, this a based on the autobiographic book by Mihiro, a famous AV idol in Japan (AV = Adult Video). So I was kinda expected a violent critic of the AV shooting and stuff, but finally, it’s more a biography to show us how managers and producers manipulate young girls who want to be famous, to slowly take them from bikini photoshoot to nude photoshoot and then V movies (V-Cinema, often bloody and erotic, very low budget) and then AV. And it’s really interesting, even if it could be more “violent” about the subject. It shows us how everything starts, how friends and boyfriend react to Mihiro’s (stage name) action, and time flies fast.

GHOST RIDER 2
The first one was not really good but this time, it’s directed by Neveldine and Taylor, the crazy directors of CRANK 1 and 2 and GAMER. And yeah, their directing is awesome, fast, crazy. Story is fast too, Nicolas Cage is perfect and crazy as often haha. Very entertaining movie, even if not perfect. And wooo, Christopher Lambert in a small part. Too bad, there was not his laugh xD

PEAK THE RESCUER
So, I watched this movie for 2 main reasons: the cover was nice, and I thought there would be some nice shots in the mountain with the snow. And I was right, the cover is nice, and the various shots of the mountain are really beautiful. Huge, covered by snow, really great. BUT except that, nothing really good. Very long (2 hours for that), predictable, very predictable, no emotions, empty characters, cheesy story, cliche everywhere blah. Almost fell asleep watching it :/
06/20 because the mountain was beautiful.

VAMPIRES by John Carpenter
Haven’t seen it in a while. Not the best Carpenter, but I still love the “cool” atmosphere and characters. It has some really good special effects, cool (and sexy) vampires, James Wood kicks ass as the vampire killer, Sheryl Lee is cute, it’s packed with great action scenes. Definitely not Carpenter’s best, but maybe his last great movie (I don’t like GHOSTS OF MARS and THE WARD was nice but not awesome).

THE HOST
I’m not a big fan of Korean movies. But my mom told me since…. well since the release of the movie to watch it. Finally, a few years later, I did (wooo I’m crazy) and it was… yeah, good! The beginning is really impressive with the monster out of the Han, running everywhere and taking people. The rest of the movie is mostly the story of a family, how they are to each others and what they are about to do to find the little girl of the family, “kidnapped” by the monster. I heard there will be an American remake. I really hope not, they will change the dark ending!

Yaaaaaaay, last week, it was the Nightmare on Elm Street marathon! The 7 original movies, the versus with Jason Voorhees, and of course, the remake. Here some quick reviews.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
The first original movie from 1984. It was my favorite as a child, still is. First time we saw Freddy Krueger. Great cast, inventive scenes, Freddy is not yet very funny, it’s a strong horror movie. Directing from Wes Craven is really nice, far more better than most of his movies, lot of scenes are cult now (the bathtub, the first murder). Really good, even if some special effects may seem old now.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2: FREDDY’S REVENGE
First one was a hit, New Line Cinema didn’t wait longer to do a sequel. New screenwriter, new composer (Christopher Young here), new director (Jack Sholder - Hidden, Wishmaster 2), for a movie completely different from the first one. I guess that’s why I like it, because the movie is not a simple sequel doing the same thing as the first one. And again, it’s a serious horror movie. Some things are not perfect of course, like the ending, way too fast and “simple”, and some scenes, not useful (the dance in the bedroom…). But lot of interesting ideas.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3: DREAM WARRIORS
Wes Craven is back for the original story, and Freddy is back to his original form let’s say. It’s the first movie of the saga when Freddy is really funny, and do jokes all the time. Some are great and really funny, some just don’t work… at all. That’s my problem with the movie, some ideas are just so great, and just after, a new idea not very good. It’s one of the most famous movie of the saga with the first one. I love the fact Heather Langenkamp is back on the leading character, to see John Saxon again, the main character (seen in BODY DOUBLE), the music by Angelo Badalamenti, some murders. But sometimes near the end, it’s just a bit too much crazy ideas.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4: THE DREAM MASTER
And it continues. This time with Renny Harlin as the director. A honest director of honest B movies (PRISON, DEEP BLUE SEA). As all his movies, there are some stupid ideas that I hate in it (the kung fu scenes, some actors not really good) but also great ideas (Freddy’s resurrection, the bug scenes), great soundtrack and amazing images.
12/20

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 5: DREAM CHILD
Lot of people don’t like this movie because there’s not a lot of murders. I love it, just for one simple thing: the directing. Shots are often amazing, lot of visual ideas, gothic atmosphere with the big castle, murders are very inventive (love the bike scene), and soundtrack from Jay Ferguson is very hypnotic.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 6: FREDDY’S DEAD
Blah! As a child, I loved this movie. Because it has a lot of jokes, a video game sequence, some things about Freddy’s past. Now, I really don’t like it, for the same reasons. Too many jokes I don’t find funny at all, the video game sequence is ridiculous, Freddy is just a sad joke. Still, the past of Freddy is interesting, even if a bit easy. In fact now, I only like the first part, when Freddy’s not here yet. As one character said, they are really lost in a town like “Twin Peaks”, and I love that.

WES CRAVEN’S NEW NIGHTMARE
Wes Craven is back in the saga, and it’s good. Lot of awesome very mature ideas in that movie, very original, real pleasure to see all these characters and actors, story interesting, Freddy is scary in this one, and not just a joker. Some troubles with the rhythm of the movie, but meh, it’s good.

FREDDY VS JASON
Already wrote what I think about it a few months ago. I still love it. Of course, characters are bad and classic, actors are not that great, but they do what they can. No, if the movie is great, it’s for other reasons. It’s incredibly fun, incredibly bloody, incredibly inventive, and except the fact that human’s characters are not always great, the story itself is good. Very inventive and great idea to put Jason and Freddy in the same movie.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET REMAKE
When it was released, bad reviews everywhere, everyone was saying it was a shame, a really bad movie and everything. I was scared. And finally kinda enjoy it. Of course, everything’s not perfect. First, Freddy’s make up is bad, and we miss Robert Englund. Actors are not always great. When it’s a nightmare, it’s way too obvious, so no suspense, and it’s not scary. BUT it’s not boring, murders are nice, the actor of Freddy did a pretty nice job, directing is more than ok, good atmosphere. Nah, I enjoyed it, even if it’s not perfect, not the best, not scary.

Bebop and Rocksteady have never been in a major motion picture. Tokka and Rahzar are the two new mutants in TMNT II. Just thought I'd clear that up. :)

Bucket List project

So, Awesome Katherine (What, you don’t know her? She’s awesome and I reblogged a lot of her photos, go check her tumblr - here: http://katherinemassier.tumblr.com/ - on her instagram) started a project. To find someone (well I’m in) or even a group of people who also have bucket lists to form a group . This group will set out to accomplish everything within reason on everyone’s bucket lists . We will also document it through iPhone / instagram , still shots with actual cameras and videos with gopro cameras .

So I started to look for my old bucket list (was pretty well hidden, sneaky list). I was able to delete some stuff already done (release a movie for instance) and add a few more recents stuff :)
Here’s part of the list, because some parts are secret *blushes* But that’s a good start :)

* Meet little cutie Katherine
* Spend the most time possible with the perfect woman (haha)
* Travel to Japan someday and live there for some time
* Spend an entire day playing Pachinko (Okay, I need money…)
* Direct and release my most personal art project: “my hate trilogy” (Porcelain, Humans, Monsters)
* Touch a shark fin
* Stop being afraid of the water (nah, I can take shower, I mean, the sea)
* Meet Mitsushima Hikari
* Visit Canada
* Learn how to play Pachelbel’s Canon at the piano

And some of the things already done:
* Do a movie and be able to release it in at least one country (“Life” with Sasha Grey, dvd released in August 2011)
* Visit Los Angeles (a month there in September 2010)
* Finally have people I can trust around me (Abi, Kath, Marie, Carrah, Shereen)
